Thrush – Prevention & Cure.
What is thrush?
Thrush is an anaerobic bacteria that eats away at the horny (dead) frog area of the horses foot.
Signs of thrush.
Thrush will create a foul offensive smell in the cleft of the horses frog. Not only will you notice the smell, but when you pick your horses feet out you will notice a black tarry discharge.
How did my horse get thrush?
Thrush is caused by a wet and dirty environment and/or poor hoof care management.
Treatment.
The horse’s foot should be picked out twice a day. Clearing away all dirt from the cleft of the frog using your hoof pick and a stiff brush. Then a type of antiseptic such as Clorox, hydrogen peroxide, or copper sulphate should be applied the horses cleft of frog daily. There are also many thrush remedy products on the market – talk to your farrier about what would be best suited for you and your horse’s needs. In addition to good foot care you need to provide a good clean dry living environment for your horse. If your horse lives in a large space such as a pasture, try to at least make the area your horse eats in dry and clean.
